Onsite Safety of our Youth Members and Optimising the Scouting Experience

At the Mount Cotton Scout Group we have an upper and lower car park. Because the lower car pack is used by our Youth Members during the section meetings, we ask that all vehicles are parked in the upper car park and youth members are walked down to our facilities.

Where there are parents and carers who are not able to make the walk down the stairs, please make arrangements with our section leaders to have someone meet you in the upper car park.

Leaders who are on duty for a section meeting will either arrive early or park up the driveway just before the lower car park. Any vehicles that require to move e.g. moving a trailer for packing for camp, must have 2 adults external to the vehicle to guide the vehicle and ensure youth members are not at risk.

Optimising the Scouting Experience

With over 30 years’ of delivering Scout Experiences to the Youth of the Redlands City and beyond, and in keeping pace with the modern child protection policies, the Mount Cotton Scout Group have found that our youth members get a better experience and are more likely to try new activities when parents follow the drop off / pick up approach to their child’s attendance.

As we have many youth members in a section, it also helps them feel safe as they are working with our small group of adult volunteer leaders who run the program who they see every week. and much like their teachers at school, they get comfortable with and trust. With this in mind we have successfully managed the drop off / pick up approach for many years to limit the number of adults onsite and ask parents to support this policy.

On those occasions when parents are invited to be part of the section night, or in case where the leaders ask for the parent to attend to help manage with their child’s behaviours so that our leaders can work safely across all youth members in a section, Scouts Qld has a sign in process and the visitor’s lanyard process to the immediate right of the entrance to both halls.

All youth sections are encouraged to hold section nights specifically for parents and carers to attend, and we value these nights greatly to do likely to see parent involvement in Scouting.

For new parents, we appreciate that you don’t know our leaders and are trusting them with your child for 1 to 2 hours per week (excluding school holidays). We invite you to be an observer for up to the first 2 weeks of your child’s attendance to get comfortable with our wonder volunteer leaders and to see your child settle in for an amazing scouting adventure.

We are looking to deliver to our communities resilient young people who have gained leadership experience, are physically active, and who care for others and believe this approach supports that goal.
